vote
A vote is a person's choice in a decision, often by marking a ballot or raising a hand. People say "vote" when they want to pick between options or express an opinion. It is about having a say in what happens next.
What a model may hear
- distributed consensus distributed systems and databases
- assume the user wants a node election, leader selection, or quorum-based agreement protocol like Raft or Paxos
- ensemble classifier machine learning
- combine multiple model predictions by majority voting or weighted voting to improve accuracy
- ranking or preference aggregation recommender systems
- treat the request as collaborative filtering or pairwise comparison of items
- smart contract function blockchain and Web3
- invoke a voting method on a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) contract
Where people and models part ways
“Let's vote on where to eat”
Meant: The person wants casual suggestions and a group decision
May be taken as: The model may generate a formal voting protocol with authentication, ballot encryption, and tally mechanisms
Say instead: “Help us each suggest a restaurant and pick the one most people want”
“I need to count the votes”
Meant: The person wants to add up survey responses or poll results
May be taken as: The model may implement a distributed counter with conflict resolution for split-brain scenarios
Say instead: “Add up how many people chose each option in this list”
“Make it so users can vote”
Meant: The person wants a simple upvote button or star rating
May be taken as: The model may design a Byzantine-fault-tolerant voting system with cryptographic verification
Say instead: “Add a button where users can click to agree with a post, and show the total”
Tips
- Say 'poll' or 'survey' if you just want to collect opinions
- Mention 'group decision' or 'informal' to avoid technical protocols
- Specify 'upvote' or 'like' for simple one-click feedback
- Say 'election' only if you need formal rules and voter verification
- Add 'no blockchain needed' if you want to block that path explicitly
Often confused with
- poll
- collects opinions without implying a binding decision
- elect
- selects one winner, not expressing a preference among options
- rate
- gives a score, not a binary or ranked choice
- consensus
- technical term for nodes agreeing, not people discussing
- ballot
- the physical or digital form, not the act of choosing
